- Simon Silva
- “Arts as a Meaning of Inspiring Learning”
- Artist Talk
- September 28, 2009
Simon Silva is an acclaimed Chicano Artist went from helping his migrant working family in the massive fields, to earning a college degree in the fine arts in become the well known he is today. He is an artist who expresses his own experiences through art, so those people who work hard everyday to support themselves and families are recognized. He started his lecture by showing a picture of one of his original pieces titled “Dreaming of Durango”, which displays an illustration of a paletero man (man who sells popsicles) and says that we need to learn from him. A conversation with a couple of wealthy friends inspired him to create “Dreaming of Durango” because the wealth individuals were complaining about not earning enough money before they retire. Silva believes that the man who sells popsicles down the streets every day should tell us that we should be humble and not greedy. I think that, that first message made me not just think artistically but also socially. That one specific piece made me, change the way I look at the people who work hard and earn less pay.
I think that his work influenced me to put experiences and characteristics of myself into my won work. I thought it was a successful event because the speaker was truthful and genuine. It was one of the better events that I witnessed on campus.
- Jose Yenque
- “Between”
- Film
- October 27, 2009
I had the pleasure of meeting Jose Yenque before he showed his movie “Between” because he came and spoke to my narrative video class acting and directing. He was a very down to earth and genuine actor who was willing to share his own experiences with students who want to succeed in a career they love. I thought the film itself was a little confusing but that could be because it is psychological thriller. After a processed everything that happened in the film I liked it a little more. After the film he told the auditorium of about 100 students that the film did not receive good reviews and the audience did not show any enthusiasm after the first premier. He said that even though it was an uncomfortable experience, he did not let it from keeping from keeping his head up high because he always had pride in the film he worked hard on. I think his general attitude about dealing with negative reviews made me realize that the reviews of others should not break you.
- Jon Phenom
- Apparel Designer
- Arts Association Event/ Lecture
- November 12, 2009
Jon Phenom is a fashion designer who has worked for Beholder, Osiris, Brobot, polymathrix, HotAir, Matise, and other known brands. In 1996 he started his career with just T-shirts and clothing concepts in a notebook. In 200 he designed his first line for the state boarding company when the specific style was becoming more popular. Now he is a successful fashion designer who travels to New York, San Francisco, Los Vegas, Phoenix, Los Angeles, and abroad on business. Since, he is a strong believer in giving back, he goes from schools to schools, speaking about he found his passion. The one thing that I took away from his presentation is that you need to stay true to what you want in order to succeed. I really appreciated his down to earth personality because I like when successful people don’t act high and mighty. I think the flaw was that the presentation was only 45 minutes so it was little bit too brief for the topic.
- Me, Myself, and College
- Art Exhibit for High School Students Art
- November 5, 2009
“Me, Myself, and College” was an art event hosted by Art Association and Palomar College’s Gear Up, to promote a high education and student art. Students from local high schools submitted an art piece that represented their interpretation of college and a higher education. There were paintings, sculptures, graphic design, and drawn illustrations of each students feeling of earning a high education. I met and spoke to a high school sophomore student about college and Cal State San Marcos. She did create a very impressive sculpture and she and her parents seemed very excited about seeing her work on display. I think that her energy motivated me to show more of my artwork because it reminded me that I cannot be so scared and hesitant.
I think the flaw of the event was that it did not start on time because the students were given a tour of the campus for a long time. I could not stay for the entire event because it was just running late.
- Art Show
- Arts Association Event
- October 15, 2009
I attended and was apart of Arts Associations first event of the semester. The art show displayed artwork from a wide range of different mediums such as photography, graphic design, fine art, and jewelry. There was not a specific theme to the show but the purpose was to showcase the talent that CSUSM holds. A lot of students from different majors created the art work and that brought more diversity within the audience. I put up a photo of my cousin eating a fudge sickle and it received good reviews from my friends who came and saw the photo. I learned how it feels to put your own work on display and it is kind of nerve wrecking.
